In December I had the pleasure of speaking at the Annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon for the Alzheimer’s Family Center. This not-for-profit organization has the most active and proactive volunteers and programs dedicated to improve the lives of families affected by Alzheimer’s and other memory disorders.

The commitment and dedication of these volunteers was recognized by their staff and supporters. I had the honor of addressing many of the volunteers involved in the Companionship Program. These trained volunteers visit families that are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s disease at home for a few hours each week.

This service is available to families living anywhere in Broward County. Other programs and services provided by the Center include In-Home Respite Care (a trained aide relieves the caregiver for a minimum of 4 hours each week); Case Management; In-Home Counseling (a trained counselor meets with the caregiver to help reduce stress, anxiety and to deal with issues related to caregiver’s responsibilities); information and referrals with questions about Alzheimer’s disease; and services available in the community for persons with the disease and others affected by it. All of their services are offered free of charge.

Alzheimer’s Family Center and their volunteers are an example of how to live well at any age.

South Florida’s preferred free bilingual senior magazine offers a full directory by county. Information includes community resource organization addresses and phone numbers, as well as hospital and hospices, rehabilitation centers, assisted living facilities, home care, adult day care and other services.

   We offer educational courses to the public and healthcare professionals in Florida. The goal is to provide CEUs (continuing education units) to healthcare administrators, nursing home and assisted living facility administrators, nursing professionals and social workers.

  The Recreational Distribution Division under Fifty Five Plus Lifestyle, with the cooperation of Scoop For Seniors, offers books, games, and videos and musical recordings for activity directors, recreation and creative arts therapists, occupational and rehab therapists, and other caregivers who work with the elderly and/or senior adults -- as well as many other products.

  We understand the needs of our South Florida diverse communities and serve them as an all-inclusive magazine. With 13% of the population being part of a minority group, we are sensitive to the needs of all of our readers!
