Heart Disease is the number one killer in the United States.  Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) is a chronic condition in which the arteries of the heart are constricted due to a build up of fatty materials, resulting in a reduction of oxygen rich blood flow to the heart.  The lack of oxygen may cause angina (chest pain), a heart attack, or even death.  If you are a male over 45 or a female over 55, you already have one risk factor for heart disease.  If you have a history of smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, live a sedentary lifestyle or have a family history of CAD, your chances of developing heart disease are even higher.  Reduce your risk factors and reduce your chances of developing heart disease.

The Cardiac Rehabilitation program at the Broward Health Wellness Center offers emotional support and nutritional guidance along with their cardiac monitored and medically supervised exercise program for those already affected by CAD.  Bi-monthly educational lectures taught by cardiac health experts help patients understand heart disease.  The topics of our lectures include Cardiovascular Risk Factors, Behavior Modification, Angina, Weight Loss, Stress Management and Benefits of Exercise.  The Cardiac Rehab team consists of cardiologists, nurses, exercise physiologists and dieticians.

The Wellness Center at Broward Health offers many medically supervised programs.  The diverse group of programs includes Pulmonary Rehab, Diabetes, Smoking Cessation, and Weight Loss.  The Wellness Center also offers personal training, massage therapy, nutritional counseling, health screenings, and over 35 different fitness classes.

Research supports the importance of exercise in the possible prevention of stroke, obesity, arthritis and cardiovascular or respiratory diseases.  The benefits of physical activity include increased flexibility and mobility as well as improved muscle strength and aerobic capacity.  Our exercise physiologists and personal trainers help individuals achieve their fitness goals, improve lean body mass (LBM), flexibility, strength, and endurance.

Mental health and wellness is also critical in maintaining an active lifestyle.  Activities in a group setting have been shown to increase motivation in the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle by relating and interacting with others in a social atmosphere.  Our group Pilates, Yoga, and Tai Chi classes help individuals achieve healthy minds and healthy bodies in a casual group setting.

The importance of a healthy diet should not be ignored.  Good nutrition affects the quality of our lives, keeps us healthy, and helps speed up the healing process if we become ill.  A healthy diet can ease the effects or symptoms of chronic diseases like osteoporosis, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, certain cancers, and conditions affecting the digestive tract.  We have Certified Clinical Dieticians which can assist in losing weight, lowering cholesterol, diabetes management, and analyze your Body Mass Index(BMI) and Percent Body Fat.

Staying physically active and eating a well balanced diet can prevent or delay certain diseases as well as relieve depression and improve overall mood.  Inactivity and consuming a poor diet can increase the chances of disease, speed up the aging process, and lead to a lack of self-esteem.  So get moving, eat healthy, and moderate any alcohol consumption.
