OLDER AMERICANS: GIFTS TO HUMANITY

edithOLDER AMERICANS: GIFTS TO HUMANITY

by EDITH SCHAFFER LEDERBERG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER OF BROWARD COUNTY

May is Older American’s Month! It is a time to pause and reflect regarding the many contributions seniors make to the community, as parents, grand and great, as well as volunteers in all phases of life.

Many elders continue to serve on boards of directors or advisory councils. A percentage maintains jobs, and their past experience levels perpetuate success for employers and other personnel.

Their history becomes an effective learning tool for students of all ages, who respect the roles played by past performers, and who merit applause that permeates all levels of society.

The sage advice of the builders of our Nation too often is set aside by the “experts”, who communicate by computers and cell phones, rather than face-to-face encounters. How unfortunate that electronics has overcome what once was the blessing of discussion on a one to one basis!

So, if only for a few moments, or even an hour or two, please take the time to call or meet with an older individual who probably would treasure your message. Just say “I love and appreciate you!” and heaven will smile on the occurrence.

Here’s to Older Americans every day of the year! •
