By EDITH SCHAFFER LEDERBERG, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

AGING AND DISABILITY RESOURCE CENTER OF BROWARD COUNTY

Broward is home to over 400,000 year-round senior residents! Thankfully, the majority is self sufficient. But the percentage of frail, dependent elders continues to rise, and our commitment to keeping them within their accustomed environments is constantly challenged. Like so many of our contemporaries, we have resided in the County for close to forty years. When we arrived, farms still dotted the main thoroughfares and traffic was bearable. New cities were appearing on regional maps, and condominium developments were being advertised in newspapers and mailings on a daily basis. The “paradise,” far from the ice and snows of the north, had a magnetic attraction that brought tourists here and held them as happy captives, who were determined to move to the southland and be able to enjoy the comfort and warmth of Florida every day of the year.

Today, many of the pioneers who migrated in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s as couples, now are single survivors. Half of the partnership is deceased or requires institutional care. With the next generation in another state and/or struggling to survive, social service agencies constantly are challenged to effect solutions for problems for which there neither was an historic pattern nor an identifiable solution.

We continue to walk the paths of life with hope, yet recognize the need for encouraging careful planning by younger generations to be prepared for later years when retirement should be a time for enjoyment rather than a struggle to survive in an atmosphere that is not always friendly to the once strong and independent individuals who now suffer the ills of entering the previously unexplored atmosphere of aging in place. •
